The state body overseeing California high school sports adopted new rules this month addressing steroid use by student-athletes.

The California Interscholastic Federation voted May 6 to require schools to adopt policies that prohibit steroid use; require athletes to sign written contracts stating they will not use performance- enhancing drugs; and require coaches to take steroid-abuse classes as part of certification.

The new rules, which go into effect this fall, come as state lawmakers around the country are pushing for steroid testing in schools and for mandatory education classes. (“Lawmakers Zero In on Steroid Use, Education,” May 11, 2005.)

Officials of the California federation says its new rules mark the first time a state association has adopted policies dealing specifically with steroid use.
