Children in Poverty Seen Increasing

After several years of decline, the number of American children living in poverty has been rising steadily since 2000, a study found.

According to the report by the National Center for Children in Poverty at Columbia University in New York City, 18 percent of children lived in poor families in 2004, an increase of one percentage point since 2000. By contrast, in 1994, 22 percent of children lived in poor families. The figures were gathered from the U.S. Census data from 1995 to 2005.
