Different kinds of entities are expected to open 18 small schools in Chicago in September.

National organizations

  • ASPIRA, a nonprofit Hispanic advocacy group, will run a second Chicago charter school serving grades 6-8.

Local community groups and charter school operators

  • A group of middle school teachers will run a 鈥減erformance school鈥 for grades 6-12. (Such schools are like charter schools, but must employ district staff.)
  • The assistant principal of a magnet school will operate a performance middle school.
  • The University of Chicago will run a second charter school, serving grades K-8.
  • Erie Neighborhood House, a social-services group, will run a K-5 charter school.
  • A former principal of a Lutheran school and a current charter school teacher will operate a K-8 charter.
  • A Chicago law firm will operate a charter for prekindergarten through grade 8.
  • Groups of teachers will run two performance schools within an existing high school.
  • A collaborative of teachers, a nonprofit education group, and National-Louis University will run a K-8 performance school.
  • Chicago International, which operates seven charter schools in Chicago, will open an eighth, serving grades K-8.
  • Betty Shabazz International Charter School will open its second local charter school, within an existing high school.

  • Military academy in a wing of an existing high school.
  • Four small high schools in a newly constructed building.
  • Selective-enrollment high school.
