A judge last week denied the Detroit district’s request for a temporary restraining order to prevent teachers from staging mass sickouts that have forced the cancellation of classes for thousands of students. A hearing was scheduled for early this week on the district’s case against the teachers’ union and others.
On Jan. 20, 88 of the district’s 97 schools were closed as a result of the sickouts, according to the district. Since the sickouts started, students have lost a cumulative seven instructional days, the district said.
Teachers have said that the sickouts are intended to draw attention to poor working conditions at the schools, cuts to their benefits, and large class sizes.
