A judge last week denied the Detroit district鈥檚 request for a temporary restraining order to prevent teachers from staging mass sickouts that have forced the cancellation of classes for thousands of students. A hearing was scheduled for early this week on the district鈥檚 case against the teachers鈥� union and others.
On Jan. 20, 88 of the district鈥檚 97 schools were closed as a result of the sickouts, according to the district. Since the sickouts started, students have lost a cumulative seven instructional days, the district said.
Teachers have said that the sickouts are intended to draw attention to poor working conditions at the schools, cuts to their benefits, and large class sizes.
