U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos may soon have another Michigander joining her at the U.S. Department of Education. Tim Kelly, a Republican, member of the state legislature,
Kelly said the ask, “just kind of came out of nowhere.” And he cautioned that he would still need to get through a background check and other vetting before being officially nominated to the post.
Like DeVos, Kelly is a huge supporter of school choice. But he doesn’t see that as the focus of this position.
“We both believe in universal choice, but this (position) is more about trying to do what we can for kids, instead of loading them up with debt and pushing everybody into four-year college degrees, maybe seeing what we can do for kids who might do well in technical training,” Kelly, an education adviser to former Michigan GOP Gov. John Engler, told the News. (It is not clear if the position will have the same scope as the assistant secretary of career, technical and adult education during the Bush and Obama administrations.)
