| NEBRASKA | Teacher performance pay may soon be coming to the Cornhusker State.
Gov. Dave Heineman, a Republican, signed into law last week a bill that would provide funding for such pay through solar- and wind-energy leases on more than 1 million acres of state-owned land. School districts will collectively bargain the details, and the statewide initiative will not go into effect unless at least 75 percent of the state’s school districts have the performance-pay model in their contracts by 2015 in order for any of the estimated $10 million annually to be disbursed.
In a year that saw 2 percent budget reductions for most other areas of state government, K-12 education will see a $18 million increase to the $1.7 billion in state aid.
