Using French Fries to Teach Consent (And Other Ways Sex Ed. Is Changing)

Uproar over high-profile cases of sexual harassment and assault has some states and school districts rethinking their sex education curricula to include maintaining healthy relationships and ensuring consent. And while those who teach sex ed. in K-12 schools say that learning about consent and relationships needs to happen much sooner, few states have an action plan to revise and rethink their approach in the #MeToo era.

In this video, Education Week correspondent Lisa Stark spoke with health educator Shafia Zaloom, who teaches “sex ed. on steroids” to students at Georgetown Day High School in Washington, D.C. Her lesson plan moves beyond the typical focus of anatomy and abstinence, and incorporates discussions on how relationships and social dynamics play out in the real world.
