Forty states and the District of Columbia have lotteries, some of which dedicate proceeds to pre-K-12 education. The newest member of this group is Oklahoma, where voters recently approved a referendum establishing a lottery with at least 35 percent of revenue dedicated to education.
Note: For Nebraska, education proceeds have been diverted to the general fund until 2007. In Tennessee, funds are currently only being used for higher education, but will be used for pre-K-12 education next year.
