Hopes, Fears, and Reality: A Balanced Look at American Charter 69´«Ã½ in 2007

The number of charter schools increased by about 4 percent between 2005 and 2007, a rate of growth that has slowed considerably since the 10 percent increase between 1994 and 1999, from the Seattle-based National Charter School Research Project, a nonprofit organization that conducts research and provides information about charter schools for the general public.

The report found that between 2006 and 2007, three states expanded the allowable amount of charter schools and one state moved to restrict the allowable number of charter schools. It also found that California, Florida, and Ohio experienced the biggest growth in charter schools during the previous year.

The data for the report were drawn from the group’s annual survey of state charter schools and from the U.S. Department of Education.
